Day 5 – Week of Surprises – Taking Care of Yourself

February 6, 2009

One of the things that I hear most often from moms is that they have very little time for themselves. One of the ways I try to help with that is by coming to your home for the photo session. This is especially appreciated by new moms. The last thing they want to do in their sleep deprived state (often recovering from a c-section surgery) is get their precious new bundle packed up and get themselves dolled up to go to a studio where they will be exposed to all kinds of germs from other children. My new moms are dressed in their lounge clothes and take nursing breaks whenever the need may arise. It is a very calm, organic experience.

Moms, for today’s contest, I would love for you to share a piece of advice with the new moms who will be reading this. Let’s make their lives a little easier by sharing the things we’ve learned. Go ahead and post them right in the comment section of this post. I’ll start: Get a fan for the babies room. My babies loved the sound of the white noise it produced and they were never awoken by loud noises like the doorbell. Plus, in the summer it was nice to have it blowing  on me while I nursed and rocked my youngest. Now it’s your turn!

So this is a REALLY awesome prize…I will have my neighbor draw a name from all the entries and the winner will get a gift certificate for a one-hour massage, in your Pensacola home, by the very best massage therapist I have ever worked with. I have worked with over 10 massage therapists in my life and I have never met someone who was able to have a sixth sense for knowing how to take care of sore muscles and tension…she is a miracle worker! Jamie Turner is a fully licensed massage therapist (Lic42262) who travels the Pensacola area, bringing the best pain relief and relaxation to her clients. She brings her table and supplies into your home; I love the convenience, and she is a genuinely wonderful person to boot! The winner will also receive a $100 gift card from Look Who Just Blouin Photography.

Sleep when you can when they are small! Don’t use their nap time to do laundry if you are tired, but nap when they nap! A well-rested mommy is a happy, more patient, milk producing mommy!

Mylicon drops, Fisher price Jumparoo, Baby Bjorn snugli, and a great sense of humor to laugh at your sleep deprived self will get you through the first year. Motherhood is the greatest blessing of all!

Know that you are the parent and don’t sweat all the bad advice people try to push onto you. I have learned great tips from parents, books and pediatricians however I was too stressed trying to parent the way some people say.

Ignore the bad advice, horror stories and all of the other junk people sell. Just try to relax and enjoy them being young, growing up together and making some mistakes. Sometimes the mistakes are the best memories!

Be caught in the moments and not the methods.

Be flexible. As new mothers, we often try to read all the “right” books and be keen on all the “right” methods on how to raise our babies. There may be moments when it seems like nothing is working, some methods aren’t going as planned, and all that advice is just not working. Try not to beat yourself up about it. Be flexible. Go with what you feel is right and most natural for your child and your family. We are gifted with motherly intuition for a reason. Be caught in the precious moments with your child and not so caught up in the methods. It is in these moments that we truly embrace the beauty of motherhood. Otherwise, we totally miss it.
